| Butch,
now 17-1/2, was diagnosed with diabetes approximately 7 years ago.
He had been losing weight, and showing the other symptoms of diabetes,
of course, though I didn't know what those were at the time, only that
something was wrong. We were fortunate not only to find a vet who
makes house calls, but one who had worked with many diabetic pets in the
past, and so options other than dealing with the diabetes for what it is
-- a treatable disease -- were never even discussed. We immediately
began a program of daily injections and frequent monitoring, and within
a few weeks Butch was doing well once again.
We've also been fortunate in that his insulin requirements have remained pretty steady over these 7 or so years, so much so that there has really been no need to perform daily tests in addition to his injections, instead just monitoring him closely for any signs that he may be having difficulties or symptoms. We've also not had to adhere to a strict diet or prescription diet. The only thing I have to watch is to make certain he gets low-magnesium food to avoid problems with FLUTD, which he is prone to. Over these years, true problems have been fairly rare; a few hypogylcemic episodes, a few periods where he became slightly symptomatic again, but nothing severe in either sense, and for the vast majority of the time we've been on just a daily routine that has worked very well for us. Actually, when it comes right down to it, his diagnosis with diabetes has actually been a good thing; it has brought me closer to him that I think I ever would have otherwise, and for that I am grateful on a daily basis.
