GINGER

Your  Name: Joel Stevens
Pet's Name: Ginger
Breed: Labrador Retriever
Birthday: July, 1989
When Diagnosed: August, 1998
What symptoms caused you to take your pet to the vet for diagnosis?  Lack of Energy, and Drinking Too much water. We think that we caught it in the first 2 weeks.
Weight: 77 pounds
Kind of insulin and dosage per injection: 21 Units of N 2 x per day.
Diet: Eukanuba Adult Maint Formula
Treats given & how often: Iams Dog Biscuits (small) when we think she needs additional food.
Other health problems (such as cataracts, Cushings, asthma, heart, arthritis, etc.)  NO CATARACTS.  Ginger is suffering from general lack of energy and appears to have some airway restriction from paralysis of the larynx.  (We are taking her to the Vet next week, but don't want to do surgery at her age unless the prognosis is for significant improvement.) We try to keep her BG below 120 and are successful most of the time.  We test infrequently, or when we think there might be a problem.  Ginger is easy to keep regulated, and we can move meals around +- an hour without much problem.

This is a personal opinion/observation, but I believe that the most important thing in prevention of cataracts is early detection, and then close regulation, to a relatively low BG level.  (say 80-150) At least it has worked for us.  Ginger is 12 years old, and diabetic for 3 years, but has no evidence of cataracts.  I suspect that most of the dogs without cataracts were  diagnosed very early, and controlled closely.
