Been reading about Diabetic cats and wanted to tell you about Eubie
my Tibetan Spaniel Mix who was diagnosed with diabetes last April.
His blood sugar level became elevated the day AFTER our standard poodle
died. Coincidence? His blood sugar level was up and down for
several weeks. Our vet contacted the vet school at Virginia Tech
and we were advised to use
We were not able to put Eubie on insulin for a couple of months because there was no consistency in his sugar level.. It was a long summer for us both. As with Sharon and Tommy I believe Eubie's sugar level would rise due to stress. I would leave him at the vets office for the day to have blood drawn and even with insulin, the level would rise. He would not eat or drink water which also affected his readings. My vet noticed this and recommended that we keep Eubie on his current dosage and not to bring him back unless I noticed any of the usual bad signs. If he had to return for blood work, I would bring him in, stay with him, take him home & then bring him back again... Another thing that helped Eubie tremendously was the addition of another dog. We adopted a large black Border Collie Mix Female and Eubie's health improved l00%. His blood sugar level stayed constant and we feel the new dog's presence has helped. We are now starting to notice cataracts forming due to the diabetes and/or his age. He is approx. 8-9 years old. Has anyone else noticed this in their pet? We are keeping a close watch on this problem and our vet has been in contact with an Opthomologist specializing in this surgical procedure..... Dianne & Eubie |
