This is general information only. There are an increasing number of medications on the market for the treatment of arthritis. You may have to experiement with several of these preparations before you find one that will give your pet relief from this condition. Always consult with your veterinarian before starting any couse of treatment. There is always the possibility of an adverse interaction between compounds.
Robaxin - One mediation that a Muffin member was using for her diabetic dog was Robaxin, an anti-inflammitory medicine. The veterinarian wrote the prescription and she purchased it at the pharmacy. Robaxin is an anti-inflammatory arthritis medication. Several members of the Muffin Pet Diabetes Group had this prescribed by their veterinarian. This may be something to consider but before use, consult your veterinarian.
Borage or Evening Primrose Oil - A Muffin member wrote: "Someone else had used it for her German Shep who had arthritis in her hips and it worked well for her. So be it cats or dogs, the Borage or Evening Primrose Oil is good stuff...atleast that's what I've read, only positive things."
Apavet "Kinesa" - This is a new, experimental drug developed in Calgary at the University of Alberta (which also has had major finds in diabetes recently). Its manufactured by Apavet, which also has a line of natural products. Their web site is www.apavet.ca and in addition to detailed descriptions of their products, they list suppliers within Canada. As at April, 2003, the Kinesa wasn't yet on their website yet but tther natural products. Kinesa contains:glucosamine, shark cartilage, requin(?), and ginseng. Before use, consult your veterinarian.
Cortaflex - In 2003 Deborah said she used this with success on her cat in the U.K. and it had received good reports by a cat magazine in the U.K. and that its also available in U.S.
Etogesic - no information available - being tried in 2003 by a Muffin member.
Yucca powder - (2003) several Muffin members have reported success
with Yucca - either powder or liquid
Another dog of mine (Ilia) had arthritis and she got Adequan injections
from the vet. Each animal is different as far as how often they need
it. My dog got it every 3 months. The vet said that some dogs
would come in every 2 weeks. I could tell when it was time for her
injection.
