"Give Diabetic Pets a Shot - For Life!"

EMERGENCY KIT
Things you may need when you have a diabetic pet.
By Debra Karmazenuk

There isn't much to this kit but when the pet isn't feeling good, it's handy to know that you can give certain household meds.  I've asked my vet and she said it was okay but not for long term use.  So everything here has been okayed.

We always ask ourselves why does it always happen on the week-end, or when the vet is not available.  Here are a few things that I have used confirmed by my vet that yes it is safe.

For when they won't eat you will need :
* Feeding syringe (ask vet)
   (put the nozzle of the syringe in the cheek this side of the teeth and squeeze,
   this way he/she will swallow and not choke)
* Baby food (meat and broth types)
*Pablum (prefferably rice cereal) or Cream of wheat cereal

Diarrhea
* Keopectate pills or liquid (for diarrhea) usually the dosage is for that of a 12 yr old child
   for dogs between 50 to 65 lbs

Dehydration
*  Pedialyte liquid  ( in case of dehydration add to drinking water )

* How to check for dehydration :  take scruff ( neck fur )
   pull gently up (like you were trying to pick him/her up ) and release,
   if the scruff goes back into place slowly your pet is dehyrated.

 Nausea  and/ or for when they vomit bile (This is what my vet told me)
* Peptobismol tablets or liquid ( eases nausea caused by diarrhea,
   helps with acid indegestion and stomac upset )
* Motion sickness pills see children's dosage, 12yr old dosage for animals between
  50 to 65lbs

Gas
Gas  can be quite painful
*  Either Beano pills or Phazyme caplets (I asked my vet and She confirmed that it is
    safe to give)

Heat Stroke
* Those lovely gel type ice packs are great for this;
   or use a wash cloth or towel, wet with cold water, wring out slightly; place the cloth
   in the freezer    for about 1/2 hour.  Put cloth on your Pet's head.
  Give him/her a Pedialite popsicle  for babies, this is great because if your Pet
   has heat stroke as likely as not he/she will also be dehydrated.
   Delmont have a great brand of Popscicle made  with real fruit and
  even better there is no added sugar just the fruit juices.
  If  if you can get your pet to eat fruit these will help.
