Hershey Porter

Sadly, Hershey lost her battle to diabetes and cushings
on Monday, May 22, 2006

Hi I am Denise Porter, and this is my dog Hershey. She is a 7 yr old chocolate minpin, and was diagnosed with diabetes in May 200l

When I was told this diagnosis, I was so afraid. I almost died. What will I do?? What will happen to Hershey?? So many questions and no place to go to get them answered. Or so I thought.

I somehow, stumbled across This website. I dont remember how, but I was looking for something to tell me more about this disease, and also to find some help for Hershey, as I am on a social security fixed income, and needed help.

Well, I contacted Susan and she was so nice to me, she asked me some questions and got me onto the list and then she told me she would help me out if I needed some help, which of course, I did.

Hershey was put on Humulin N and is now on 8 units 2 x daily. At first I couldnt get to give Hershey her shot, she just wouldnt let me, but then I realized the only way I was going to get her shot into her, was for her to have her face buried in her food dish full of her food!! I had not had any problem with her not eating so this worked out well for us. So I will fix her dish with her Rx food, Hills RD canned and Hills RD dry, and then put the dish down for her to eat, then I give her the shot in the scruff of her neck area, and she gives me no problems. Thank Goodness!!

I thought everything was going fine until one day I noticed Hershey had a tiny bit of hair missing in different spots. Oh no, now what.

Well, Hershey was diagnosed with Cushings Disease in Feb. 2003. So now I had another problem to deal with, with Hershey.

Well, we just finished "loading" her with the Lysodren medication and just today the vet called to tell me that so far her blood work looks good, and we now will just give Hershey the medication on 3 days of the week, monday wednesday and friday  half of a 500mg pill 2 x daily instead of her having to have a pill everyday. This is good news.

She will have to be rechecked again, in 6 weeks, with the blood test, to see if we can lower her amount of days she will need to have the medication. That will be great if she didnt have to have it for 3 days and could have it for even less days, but so far she is doing very well.

I am so happy about this, and without the care and concern of Susan and this list, I would not be here writing this good news about Hershey. It is only because of all the great people on the list that I have learned alot of information and help.

Thank you so much everyone.

P.S.

May 28, 2006

Hershey Is gone now, at the RB, and I miss her very much. She was regulated very well with the diabetes, and was on 10 units of Humulin N, for a long time, and when she went to the bridge.

In the beginning of her being diagnosed with cushings, she was doing very well. She did good on the Lysodren medication and I was so glad about that. But.. towards the end Hershey no longer could take much of the cushings med, it made her very sick, and then the last week of her life, she couldnt take any of the cushings meds. Her cushings symptoms were back full speed ahead and it was very bad. My poor little girl's pancreas and liver just couldnt take it anymore, everything was failing, and on Monday, May 22, 2006 my little girl lost her fight, she was very sick all sunday evening, and then on monday morning she just was vomiting and I had to take her to see doc for the last time. I just knew it was time to say good bye to my little girl.

She was such a happy "pinhead" (minpin)  LOL, oh she was and she wa so protective of me, her mommy and we used to go on scooter rides me on the scooter and her walking, and we checked the mail like that every day, and she just loved it. But towards the end, she didnt even really want to go on the walks anymore, which was so sad to watch because she always loved our rides.

It is so hard for me  just knowing my Hershey is gone and I cannot snuggle with her anymore, but at least she is now free of pain and I did the most unselfish act for her the best present I could have given to my girl. I miss Hershey very much.

She now is At the Rainbow Bridge with her biological mommy, Jagger, who went to the rainbow bridge on March 30, 2004.  I miss Jagger so very much also. Jagger was a black and rust minpin and she was 11 years old when she went to the bridge. She was diagnosed with diabetes about 8 months before she went to the bridge. She just one day started having seizures really bad, so... they wouldn't get better, they were getting worse, so again, that was the day that I dreaded, and It was the day that I had to make that decision, and she went to the bridge.

It is so very hard to lose our furkids, as we all know, and I am missing both of my babies so much right now, especially my Hersheygirl as she Just went to the bridge.

Thank you so much to everyone on this Muffin group who have helped me with Hershey and Jagger when I needed the help. I just couldn't have done it without your help. And Susan, a Special Thank You goes out to you for so many things you did for us.

Thanks to all,
Love,
Denise and my little angels Jagger and Hershey
