  • June 30, 2007 - As of 9:00 this evening, Hubbell is very ill and is at the California Animal Hospital.  His ketone and blood glucose sugar levels are up and he's running a fever due to an infection they are trying to locate.  The fund we at Muffin try to maintain is depleted - we have contributed almost $1,000 to Hubbell's care and we're told the bill is now at $3,000.

We are pleading for donations to help save this dog's life - even $5 will make a big difference!  Please direct any funds to the clinic:

    Hubbell's Story:

HELLO, My name is LEE. My doggies’ names are HUBBELL and BABS. They are both nine (9) years old. Although my “girl” BABS has her own medical problems (she is in need of a very expensive surgery for a HUGE FATTY TUMOR), I am trying to get help now for my ‘boy” HUBBELL. I love both of my “babies” with all of my heart. But I must say that HUBBELL is beyond special!! I know I am biased, but I will tell you I have never seen ANY dog get the kind of attention and affection that HUBBELL gets from all that meet him.  I would like to tell all, the story of this special creature of GOD, and how he not only changed my life…but indeed has saved it!

Hubbell is a gorgeous (again I know I am biased, but just look at his cute pics!..lol), BORDER COLLIE/ BELGIAN SHEPARD mix. Nine years ago, I had decided that is was time to rescue a dog. A strange almost “compulsion” hit me from out of the blue!

So then I found BABS. She is a dog like you have NEVER seen! It took four VETS to even figure out what kind of dog she is! She is  a… WHEATON TERRIER/ BOUVIER/ CHOW  mix. She looks like a big black teddy bear. And she rules this roost!..lol  So I thought I was done.

And then the (“voice”)..lol, started again! “YOU MUST GET BABS A COMPANION!” Boy I fought that one tooth and nail!! At the time I lived in a small studio bungalow with my partner. And now BABS. What was I thinking?! Good thing that BABS never had fleas. Because there would have been no room for them! Lol Also at the time, although I didn’t know it, I was in the early stages of M.S...I was feeling very poorly. The last thing I needed (I THOUGHT), was another mouth to feed and take care of.

But one day, as we were next door to the place we adopted BABS from, I felt that “urge” again, to go inside. And there was HUBBELL! The potential fleas would have to find their own pad!..lol  The moment he got into the car, and saw BABS, it was obvious that not only was he meant to be with me, but that he had found his “doggie soul mate”!

Although I was left with two (2) dogs to take care of (on a fixed income) on my own, for five (5) years now, I thank GOD each day for this glorious obligation. And it has been doubly difficult due to the fact that HUBBELL was diagnosed with DIABETES almost five years ago.  I knew nothing about the care of dogs when I adopted my babies. Hence, when my first VET put both dogs on VETALOG (steroids), for a long period of time (due to allergies), and neglected to tell this unknowledgeable pet mommy, about long term side-effects. And now my poor baby has DIABETES! Which, sadly to say is getting worse at this time.

He recently has gone from using seven (7) units of insulin twice a day, to having to use fifteen (15) units. The cost of his care has increased greatly in the past month. Not just for his supplies, insulin, meters, medications, etc., but his immediate need of expensive tests. In order to get him regulated again.

Lastly, I want to tell everyone just some of the things that make Hubbell so special. Especially to me. Earlier I said that my dogs, but especially HUBBELL, have not only made my life worth living, but in fact, has helped to actually KEEP ME ALIVE! How you may ask? Well, firstly, although HUBBELL has his bad days as of late, it never ceases to amaze me how he still acts like an exuberant puppy, who can still play a mean game of Frisbee (on his good days, and despite the fact that he is almost totally blind due to cataracts), and always has a smile on his gorgeous face! I can not tell you how this has been the major factor in keeping me from going down into a dark abyss.

He is a bundle of energy (on his good days. which until recently was most of the time), and love and fun. If it weren’t for the fact I want to make him happy all the time, I would join BABS on the couch all the time. But somehow, when I look into those radiant brown eyes of his, that somehow say, “come on mommy let’s go play!” it gives me the strength and desire to go on.

There is not enough space on this whole computer to tell you all the reasons I owe them, but again, especially HUBBELL, who brings extra joy and vitality to my life. Not only does he walk by my side in my shadow, but he does another unbelievable thing. You see amongst my many health problems, I have several breathing troubles. The worst being SLEEP APNEA. This is a serious problem, and I have it quite severely. It can cause heart attack. Stroke and brain damage.  I used to have a CPAP machine which keeps me breathing. But it broke!  I cannot afford a new one now. When I lost the use of my CPAP, and would wake up gasping for air, I would see HUBBELL, standing next to my bed with a very concerned look on his face.  All night he would do this.  Without the CPAP, I get progressively worse. So he then started gently rocking as he stood over my body to wake me up. My own personal life-guard!  But I really could not believe it when he started to do the next thing. I had the worst episode ever, and was choking in my sleep.  I was awakened to find him ever so gently breathing into my mouth! How he knew to do this only GOD knows. But by doing his own form of “doggie CPR”, I believe there is a good chance he has saved  me from even more serious heart/ brain damage. And not to be too dramatic. EVEN DEATH! He actually has helped me stay alive during this time without my CPAP! Many dogs have been known to save lives. But my baby does it on a nightly basis Who can top that one?!!!

This is just some of the reasons I feel my baby is so very special. I appreciate anyone taking the time to get to know us. My little family and me. I have always taken care of myself and my problems. I have a lot of pride. Sometimes to a fault. But now I forego that pride because my HERO needs help. If anyone can sponsor my baby and help him through his health problems, you will be saving all of us. Therefore, I respectfully ask for whatever help. Anyone sees fit to give.   I want to thank all who have read this for your time and consideration.  Respectfully,  LEE L.
